The ability to make such objects means that prototypes or models of bigger objects can be made first. One example of this is the suit worn by actor Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 2. Designers were able to create a small version of the suit to give to the director and producers for their feedback. They could then make alterations before creating the life-size version. A similar approach was taken for the Demogorgon monster in the series Stranger Things.

Stop-motion animated films such as Coraline, The Boxtrolls, and ParaNorman make use of 3D printers to create different facial expressions for the puppets that serve as the characters. Recently, a pioneer in this field, Laika, a company based in Portland, Oregon, won the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Scientific and Engineering Award for their achievements using such technology.
